In the Studio - OTSDR - Keswick, UK

Based in a small studio on a farm in the Lake District, Jeffrey Bowman is a creative and brand strategist working with sustainable, lifestyle and outdoor brands. He also creates artwork that is inspired by the local landscapes and he also runs his own small brand OTSDR, a contemporary outdoor lifestyle brand.

We caught up with Jeffrey to explore his studio space and how Hotbox has helped him organise the studio into different sections, from art making to strategy work and everything in between.

Could you describe your workstyle to us?

My workstyle is really focused around being flexible. I have the studio space and I have space at home so I can work between the two depending on what kind of work I'm doing, which I guess really dictates where I’m at. I also travel to see clients in Manchester / London. It’s a real mix. But I’d say 75% of my week is down on the farm at the studio.

Can you describe the layout and design of your studio space? What elements did you prioritise when setting it up?

For me it was always about creating a space that felt like somewhere you could work and hangout at the same time. I also wanted to have ‘zones’ where you can make art, work on the computer, pack and ship my own products and sit and relax. So there’s 4 areas in the studio (which isn’t huge) that facilitate all of those activities. The key priority in this has been storage, giving each space it’s unique feel and making everything readily available to do whatever you need in that space.

What specific tools or equipment do you have in your studio that are essential to your workflow, and how do they contribute to your creative output?

Work surfaces have really been key. They have allowed me to create the zones I need to work and section up the studio. It’s laid out so I can flow between any space whenever I feel like it. Hotbox has also been really helpful with that, especially the Hotbox 1. Being able to put everything in there from paint brushes to notebooks. And then the coffee machine is also essential to my workflow. I have invested in a pour over set which means I have to stop and take my time when making it, mini breaks throughout the day.

Are there any personal touches or unique features in your studio that particularly inspire you or help you stay motivated?

Surrounding myself with other peoples work, books, art, vinyl figures, photography, coffee packaging etc. I’ve tried to make it feel like a place that isn't just for work but for sitting and feeling stoked to create and make. It’s really important to bring this space to life in that way, as it’s just me who uses it, so it needs to feel like a place where I exist. People do come down from time to time to have a coffee or use a desk. Also my dog Loki is here most days, he keeps me grounded, he's a unique feature to the studio, we go out for walks 3 times a day just in the field out the back, it’s a good way to have a break and change flow.
