Step into designer Rebecca J Kaye’s studio and you will find a reflection of her mathematical approach to her artistry. Every item has a purpose and a place and there is a practical and efficient feel to the workspace, alongside the use of colour blocking which brings a vibrant energy and playfulness to this creative hub.
Movement is important for Rebecca in her studio, she talked to us about how she likes to have break-out spaces she can move to when she needs a change of perspective, a boost of creativity, or simply a mindful break.
She has carefully curated her space so that every workstation has it’s rightful place and purpose, making use of the available storage space.
This also means she needs to be able to move nimbly between these workstations, depending on the task at hand and so her Hotbox 1, filled with her most used tools and materials, allows her to pick-up and go when the moment takes her.
She keeps a second Hotbox 1 packed and ready for design fairs and markets too, providing even more flexibility in her practise.
Workspace storage is also something Rebecca has taken time to get right. She has learnt a lot from her time spent in previous studios and her top tips for designing effective storage solutions are to:
- Think about what you need in the space
- Continue to regularly reduce and refine - be efficient + creative with available space
- Ensure storage frees up workspace and breakout spaces
- Prioritise creating a calming environment
We asked Rebecca how her Hotbox 1 helped in her home studio?
"Hotbox is basically storage space on the go. So it’s perfect. I keep one stocked with essentials for my design markets so it’s ready to go and the other has desk essentials and tools that I can move between my desks."
